Content Creation and the Games Industry

Hi Bubadinos,

I’m hoping that this is a reflection of my mental health and the state of the gaming industry at the moment and nothing more. This also isn’t set in stone but I wanted to chat about where I am at with gaming and content creation.

My mental health has been in the trenches for the past few months, but the breaking point has definitely been the shutting down of production for Destiny 2. I have spoken about this on stream, through twitter posts and in multiple YouTube videos that Destiny was the main driving point for my content and was my safe space. My third space, my home away from home. It is where I found my people, where I felt wanted and loved and with no support and dying population, I feel that I am watching my childhood home burn down with no water to put out the flames.

I have spent the past couple months since the initial announcement trying to find a new home for myself, a new game that could fill the void that Destiny 2 is going to leave. There is no other game that is like Destiny. That has the mechanics and builds like Destiny, the raids. The hecking raids that I adored about Destiny. No game has that. The one thing that compares in terms of enjoyment would be Final Fantasy XIV’s savage raiding, but even that does not compare because it’s like comparing apples and oranges, you just can’t. I have tried Warframe, The Division 2, and some other MMOs that my lovely viewers have been suggesting and while I have enjoyed my time playing them - none have grabbed my attention like Destiny did. Don’t get me wrong: they have been fun and I intend to keep playing and making videos from them while I can but the passion and love on the level that I had for Destiny just isn’t there.

Then one night I was thinking: in the current state of the games industry, do I even want a Destiny 2 replacement? Because I could get a game that fills the void. That makes me happy and has a long, fulfilling grind that I am looking for with a challenging and worthwhile endgame; and it could be ripped away from me again by the greedy for-profit corporations simply because it didn’t meet the profit expectations like Destiny 2 didn’t for Bungie and Sony, and I would be forced to go through all this heartbreak and depression again. Do I really want to go through this all again?

This led to me thinking about my career as a creator. I am approaching my 10 year anniversary of being a streamer and content creator. I have been streaming for a very long time and do not regret a single stream or moment in my career, but maybe it is time for me to take a different path or slow down. The lack of games to play that have my interest has already killed the motivation to stream so why keep forcing myself. I absolutely love my community and do love to stream to my friends but I need something to do while streaming, I just can’t chat. I’ve never really been a just chatting streamer. I love being able to experience worlds for the first time or work on a hard grind alongside friends and community and be able to yap and sing while doing it. I could do art, but even then I go through stages of intense burnout where I have no motivation to draw as well, so there would be content droughts. So what now?

I don’t necessarily want to give up and leave the content creation field behind, but I don’t have answers either.
